By Yasoypintor @antoniobasso

Modern art and decontextualization.

Last week, one of most expressive abstract and non abstract (they called it informalism) artist of the 2oth century died.

Antoni Tapies has been with out no doubts one of the greatest committed and innovative spanish artists of all times.

Antoni Tapies art and thoughts made important contributions to modern art as well as to many contemporary artists like me (Antonio Basso).

Artists like him have opened the eyes to a better and further evolutioned art. Thanks to him and to some others I mention in this post, artists go ahead, innovate and add value to the history of art.

This makes me think about Albert Einstein who said that his discoveries would help future investigators improve them further.

To me, Antoni Tapies was influenced by Marcel Duchamp´s creations. Probably it is thanks to Duchamp that Tapies was able to do what he did. They both decontextualised objects (Duchamp did it first), adding them different meanings to their original ones. They were brave artists, 100% ahead of their times, and neither cared if their art was going to be liked. They simply created what they wanted, with lot of commitment, faithful to their ideas, trying to add something new.

I also find common denominators between Tapies and Robert Rauschenberg art. You don´t need to be a modern abstract art expert to see the similarities between both artists. I don´t know if they ever met. I don´t know if they knew each other creations. But the similarities are clear. Rauschenberg was another committed and inteligent artist, that used to decontextualize objects, and whose artworks contributed to the evolution of modern art.

I finish this post mentioning another artist that outside mercantilism objection or critics, is probably already influencing modern art. He is Damien Hirst. I believe decontextualization is also a common denominator between his art and the one of Duchamp, Rauschenberg and Tapies. Like them, he is ahead of his time and likely openning the doors to further art developements “if he leaves any left”.
