Despite the boring drizzle of these days, the desire of the Spring time is great and the important March 23 is approaching. What can I say? We take advantage of the beautiful season where the sagre, the markets and the festivals are multiplying.
Let's for example go in Pitigliano in Tuscany. 16, 17, and March 19, 2013 there will be Torciata of St. Joseph. Many of our events are linked with the Catholic religion. This is mixed with the customs of our ancestors – above all the farmers- giving us some magnificent feasts that have the sense of a distant past. In this case, the bonfire is propitious for the coming of Spring after a long winter season, the farmers were eager to return to work - this was their life sustenance.

The Pagan ritual of the propitiatory bonfire seems to date back to the Etruscan times-the great civilization that occupied these Tuscan lands. Then the ritual was associated with the holy picture of St. Joseph, maybe in the Middle Ages - when the church had a strong temporal and spiritual power on the Italian territory divided into the feuds. The show is definitely suggestive: some people represent the torciatori, theywalk in a line with the task of setting fire to a big puppet erected in the main square. It is the symbol of the winter-called invernacciu. The task of St. Joseph is to protect the Spring. The inhabitants will pick up a pinch of the ashes of the fire and they keep will them in the house as the amulet for the year. This ritual is repeated in different forms in many parts of Italy - even in different times- always as a propitiatory act to dispel the winter. This makes me think of a common origin repeated locally. As you see it’s the same the world over! Nonostante la noiosissima pioggerella di questi giorni la voglia di primavera è tanta e il fatidico 23 marzo si sta avvicinando. Cosa posso dirvi? Approfittiamo della bella sagione dove sagre, mercatini e feste si moltiplicano
Andiamo per esempio in Toscana e precisamente a Pitigliano. 16, 17, e 19 marzo 2013 ci sarà la Torciata di San Giuseppe. Molti nostri eventi sono legati alla religione cattolica che si mescola con gli usi dei nostri antenati contadini, dando luogo a magnifiche feste che hanno il sapore di un passato lontano. In questo caso il falò vuole essere propiziatorio per l’avvento della primavera: dopo la lunga stagione invernale i contadini erano ansiosi di poter riprendere il lavoro dei campi che era per loro fonte di sostentamento. Il rito pagano del falò propiziatorio pare possa risalire addirittura al tempo degli etruschi , grande civiltà che occupò queste terre toscane. In seguito fu affiancato all’immagine sacra di San Giuseppe, si pensa nel Medioevo, dove la chiesa aveva una forte influenza temporale e spirituale sul territorio italiano frazionato in feudi.
Lo spettacolo è sicuramente suggestivo: una parte di persone che rappresentano i torciatori partono in fila con il compito di dar fuoco ad un grande pupazzo eretto nella piazza principale e che rappresenta l’inverno- chiamato appunto invernacciu. Il compito di San Giuseppe sarà proteggere la bella stagione. Gli abitanti raccolgono una parte della cenere del falò e la conservano in casa come portafortuna per l’anno. Questo rito è ripetuto in diverse forme in varie parti d’Italia e magari in diverse date ma sempre come atto propiziatorio per scongiurare la brutta stagione. Questo mi fa pensare ad un origine comune ripetuta poi localmente. Si potrebbe quasi dire che tutto il mondo è paese.

Martedi 19 marzo ore 18,30 CORTEO SBANDIERATORI ore 22,00 parte la tanto attesa TORCIATA DI SAN GIUSEPPE alla cui fine si raccolgono le ceneri. Ce ne sono tante…prendetene un po’ anche voi: chissà che vi portino fortuna.
