A Reality Check on Lightsabers

Posted on the 06 November 2011 by Vandanan @vandanan_m
I feel that a reality check on those fancy, long, shiny thingummies called 'Lightsabers' is something really necessary. Check out, and have fun!
Many a gear that Hollywood shows off does become reality. Or at least, do so theoretically. Today, I’m gonna show you something about lightsabers. Lightsabers, according to the story of star trek, it is solidified light. Now, come on, that’s rubbish. Light is a form of energy and it will always travel in a straight line (speaking in the elementary level, light CAN bend under some circumstances), and taking about solidifying light is nonsense.

A reality check on Lightsabers

A lightsaber, as in the movies.

But come to think of it, there are stuff that can imitate lightsabers. In Michio Kaku’s books, Kaku explains that the Fourth state of matter, or plasma, as we know it can be used to mimic the properties of these lightsabers.
Plasma is more or less like ordinary gas, except that instead of atoms, they particles are in fact, ions, or charged particles. This stuff is really hot, and slice through metal and other things, just like lightsabers. That’s theory. But who knows about reality?
That, I will leave to HSW. For more info, click here.
