Meribel is easily one of the most incredible places the world has to offer for skiers of all levels. While the majority of Meribel’s slopes can be found above the tree line, covered runs are also present and are an excellent choice for days when the weather is not quite so delightful.
Pistes (or marked ski runs) are well marked by signs and there are maps available as well, but it’s not always easy to know where to go if you aren’t familiar with the area. We’ve put together a handy little guide to help you find the perfect piste for you, no matter what your skiing level may be. From beginner to expert, Meribel has something for everyone.
Beginner
Meribel hasn’t always catered well to beginners but it is definitely improving. If you are looking for beautiful slopes as well as excellent accommodations, then Altiport is definitely the place for you. Green runs are found in abundance here and a mid-station has been added so that real beginners can ski down from there before trying to take it from the top. There are ski lifts to the resort, six of them are free, and there is even an individual lift pass reserved specifically for the novice.
Intermediate
Meribel in its entirety has often been called Heaven on earth for intermediate skiers. The Trois Vallees has miles and miles to offer and intermediate skiers hitting the slopes can rest assured the smooth skiing will provide a sense of satisfaction unlike anything else.
If you’re still in that middle stage between beginner and intermediate, the Plattieres gondol’s second station is the perfect ski run for you. This piste faces north and can generally be found in good conditions for smooth skiing. The only problem is that the ideal area is often used for a skiing school and then on the other side, Mottaret is a crowded and often dangerous area. The two opposite extremes present can potentially spoil an otherwise perfect area.
Perhaps the nicest thing about Meribel is that even the newest intermediate skiers can find plenty of pistes to offer comfort as well as challenge.
Expert
There is no lack of excitement and challenge for advanced and expert skiers on the pistes of Meribel. Mont du Vallon is an excellent place to start where you are sure to not be disappointed. The downward cruise is exceptionally long and is always well taken care of so you’re guaranteed a smooth sail.
If you are looking for a mogul run, the side of Roc de Tougne draglift has an excellent run which then routes up to Mont de la challe.
If you’re looking for a real challenge, the valley’s north end has the Face Run to offer. This was created in 1992 for the women’s Olympic downhill race. It’s a fast ride, but if you keep your eyes open, you’ll get breathtaking views of the village below. The opposite side of the valley is where the real adventure (and inherent danger) really lie. The Mauduit run is now classified red but used to be a classified black piste.
Clearly Meribel has something to offer everyone; from the absolute beginner to the thrill-seeking daredevil. You really can’t go wrong in choosing this French ski resort for your ski holiday this season.
