A Deafening Silence

Posted on the 02 March 2014 by Yamini
Silence is good, it gives time to reflect, it gives space to gather one’s thoughts, a prelude to action. Silence before the storm, they say. A time when the sea focuses all its energy for that one big strike. But silence is not perpetual, it is meant to be broken, to give space to the sound of action, the explosion of change.
But this time silence is taking too long to break, this time silence seems to be perpetual. It makes me wonder if action and change have lost their battle and Silence has emerged victorious. Article 377 is back, today somebody else can dictate who I should love, somebody re-writes what is natural, but the silence hasn’t broken. This time newspapers were filled with reports of people avoiding celebration on Valentine’s day for the fear of hooliganism. We have stopped sharing happiness but have preserved the silence. The silence still lived. Racism came back with a bang, with physical and mental attacks on people, but still there was no storm. A book was banned for trying to show the different possibilities, the right to hear alternative voices was  curbed, but there was still no noise. Am I over reacting or we have taken too much comfort in the silence.
A few months back there was a media revolution on corruption, media or no media people were up in the streets when they felt their “money” was being laundered. Today our lives are being meddled with, but there is silence, deafening silence. Some Or is it probable that our senses have been numbed successfully, we now fail to see, we now fail to listen and hence we now fail to speak. Or the most dreadful of it all, are we the ones who are secretly supporting this “re-culturization”, unknowingly have we all sold our souls to the idea of non-existent glorious unified past.. Whatever is the reason, this silence…it is killing me
