People don’t often think about these weird aspects of dating, and what to do when they encounter them. From pickup lines to Facebook stalking, I’m here to tell you what to do and how to deal.
1. Cheesy pickup lines.
They can work if they are silly and light hearted enough to make a person laugh. Make sure you get your skills perfected before you start throwing down some cheesy lines like, “Are those pants from outer space? Cause that butt is out of this world.” Nobody wants to hear that on a first date.
2. Don’t panic if somebody doesn’t text back right away.
Take a chill pill! They are probably napping, or they might be dead. Rest assured that it is probably not about you.
3. A person’s possessions can tell a lot about the relationship’s future.
If you go over to your guy’s house for the first time and he has luxury accommodations but works for minimum wage, he will most likely have a spending problem and a lot of debt. A hilarious example comes to mind from an episode of “Parks and Recreation”, we find out that Tom has “amenities everywhere” including chocolate fountains, orchids and unisex cologne. Overspending a credit card is funny on television, but a red flag in real life.
4. Make sure that the relationship is going somewhere before you show it off.
It might seem counter-intuitive to hide a potential partner from friends, but think about how exhausting it can get for your friends to be introduced to a new boy-toy every week!
5. First impressions are powerful.
Not only when meeting a date for the first time, but also meeting a person’s family. Making a snap judgments about a person based on their family life is sometimes okay; just ask them about any red flags you see. How somebody interacts with their crazy family will tell you a lot about what kind of person they are.
6. Dating can be affected majorly by culture.
For the instance of gift giving, if you are in Russia or dating a Russian woman, never give an even number of flowers. It can be seen as morbid in this culture because it symbolizes a funeral. Ask questions about family backgrounds and customs, you will usually be pleasantly surprised.
7. Over thinking gifts is harmful.
Early on in a relationship it is much more important to give a gift they will like, rather than an expensive gift. This turns out to be pretty easy. A personalized gift will go a long way in a new relationship.
8. Every couple has a different chemistry that will guide the progress of intimacy.
Dates are hardly ever like they are in the movies. It’s totally natural if you don’t get a kiss on the first date.
9. Social media affects dating immensely.
Prior to getting too serious, but not before you actually meet the person, it is good to Google and even Facebook stalk a person. Do they have a ton of pictures with the opposite sex in bars? Do they have a million duck-face selfies? You may want to break it off before you get too emotionally attached.
There you have it, nine totally overlooked and underappreciated aspects of dating. Easily give your new relationship that needed boost!
