If you’re pregnant and still deciding on whether you want to go in for a ‘C’ section or a normal delivery you might want to know the pros and cons of each procedure.
If you decide on a normal delivery procedure, you might also want to decide as to whether the birth should be natural.
For those who don’t know what a natural childbirth is, it is a birth where no medication is prescribed.
Here are the benefits of delivering a baby in a natural and un-medicated manner:
1) Labor is shorter:
Epidural or other pain killer’s medication numb the body, slowing down the labor process and so when the actual labor begins you won’t know that it has started. By not feeling the signals the body is sending them, they mostly miss the signs of when to push and moments when it might be easy to push out the baby, thereby making the labor process long and strenuous.
2) Facilitates breastfeeding sooner:
Babies that are born without any medication during labor are more alert and show interest in breastfeeding.
It is not uncommon to find babies slightly drugged because of the pain medication passing on to them in the process.
3) Healthy for mom and baby:
Natural childbirth is more relaxing than you think. When epidurals are administered to reduce the pain and speed up the contractions they do not giving enough time for the mother to recover between contractions.
So the oxygen levels that reach the baby are lower in women who get tired in the process of shortly spaced contractions.
4) You are in control and feel empowered:
Women when they go through the phase of natural childbirth in their lives, feel a sense of accomplishment after going through the painful and Hercules task of delivering a baby.
The extreme conditions of labor make a women feel strong and fearless and more confident about life in general.
5) Increases chances of external intervention:
When an epidural or similar drug is administered, the labor process is slowed down and the woman gets disconnected with the process by not having to push when required. So in these cases, doctors usually intervene and use a pair of forceps to pull the baby out from the birth canal to shorter the process which has been made longer due to the epidural.
6) Faster recovery:
Natural delivery is a wonderful process. Endorphins are released in the body to help soothe the body after such a painful process and so these ladies are usually happy soon after birth.
No drugs are administered here for which they have to recover from.
7) Live the experience:
Women learn a lot about endurance from the process of childbirth. They connect with their bodies and the experience it has gone through and even bond sooner with their babies. But in the case of epidural births, the woman is often disconnected from her body that leads to dis-satisfied mothers as they are not in their full senses or conscious state to welcome their baby into the world.
So after reading this I’m sure you might want to stay away from medicated deliveries unless you have a complication that calls for these drugs.
