6 Of The Best Selling Video Games Of All-Time

games

Ever since video game consoles were first introduced in the late 1970s, there has been a steady stream of games that have become so popular that they can only be considered iconic. When you talk about the best selling video games of all-time, sometimes the number of units sold does not properly emphasize the game’s significance. It cannot be denied that video games have made an impact on pop culture, but there are five games in particular that have set themselves apart from the rest.

Super Mario (1985) – 298 Million Units Sold As Of 2015

The Mario character developed by Nintendo has become one of the most popular and recognizable characters in video game history. Super Mario is the game that first introduced the Mario character in 1985 and it has gone on to sell nearly 300 million copies in a variety of formats. From direct downloads to PC adaptations, Super Mario remains the pinnacle of video game success.

Tetris (1984) – 143 Million Units Sold As Of 2015

As a video game franchise, Tetris is the most successful game ever developed and released by a Russian company. Tetris is also the only game not part of a franchise that has broken the 100 million mark in units sold. While Super Mario is part of an entire universe that helps to push its sales higher and higher, Tetris has established and maintained its success on its own.

Minecraft (2009) – 60 Million Units Sold As Of 2015

When it comes to the game Minecraft, there appears to be a sort of delayed reaction to its success. Even though the game has been available since 2009, it wasn’t until late 2013 that it started to become popular all over the world. The game is based on building whatever the player wants out of simple blocks and it can go on as long as the player wants. People have been posting pictures of the things they have created on Minecraft and it gives the game the appearance of being the digital version of the Legos building blocks.

Grand Theft Auto V (2013) – 45 Million Copies Sold As Of 2015

The Grand Theft Auto franchise is one of the most controversial video game franchises in history because of its violent content. The controversy has not stopped the game from showing up in a variety of pop culture references on television and in movies, and the fifth game in the franchise has already sold 45 million copies in only two years.

Call Of Duty: Black Ops (2010) – 25 Million Copies Sold As Of 2015

What makes Call Of Duty: Black Ops so significant is that it sold 5.6 million copies within 24 hours of its initial release. The Call Of Duty franchise has grown in popularity over the years, but the sales record set by the Black Ops installment in its first 24 hours of availability has not been achieved by any other game in history.

When you watch the Bobby Kotick video on YouTube, you can get a feel for how much of a surprise the popularity of video games is to the people who make them. Video game executives all over the world are clamoring to put together the next big title that will break 100 million units sold, and even break the record for sales within the first 24 hours set by Call Of Duty: Black Ops.
