5G: The Future of Cell Phone Networks

Posted on the 20 February 2015 by Anna Peterson

It’s closer than you think – 5G could become available around the world in about 10 years!

Huawei Antenna

5G could become available worldwide by 2020 – Huawei already has a prototype base station! In about 10 years, we could see antennas similar to Huawei’s Ultra Node (picture) all around us. And although it is still unclear what 5G technology will provide us with, there are several prediction that suggest some brilliant things.

Faster Than Ever: 5G Networks

It is expected that 5G standards will be finalized during 2015 or early 2016, and that they will support speeds of 10 Gbps. This translates into downloading an HD movie in a matter of seconds. Users around the world will have access to 8K, 3D videos, and more services and features that are not supported by 2G, 3G or 4G networks.

5G and the Internet of Things

Internet of Things

Some say that by 202 there will be 50 to 100 billion devices connected to the internet. This rise in connected devices will happen because a number of inanimate objects will be using the 5G network, and the phenomena is called the Internet of Things. We are not talking about you remote-controlling your heating, but trains being able to tell you if there are free seats while they are in the station. Pretty amazing, don’t you think?
