50 Books That Will Change Your Life | World Book Day

By Bethtinkerbell @TinksLostGirls

I saw this over on Hayley’s blog, and knew I had to take part. I do a fair amount of reading, but I don’t think I will actually have read all that many out of these 50, however we’re about to find out!

Books That Will Make You Laugh

Geek Girl by Holly Smale
Angus, Thongs, and Full Frontal Snogging by Louise Rennison
The Secret Diary of Adrian Mole aged 13 3/4 by Sue Townsend
The Hitchhikers Guide to the Galaxy by Douglas Adams
Diary of a Wimpy Kid by Jeff Kinney
Catch 22 by Joseph Heller

Score: 1/6

I do want to read Geek Girl, and The Hitchhikers Guide to the Galaxy. I am too old to read Diary of a Wimpy Kid, and I think I was too old to read it when it was released. I was a teenager when Angus, Thongs, and Full Frontal Snogging was out, and I definitely read it before seeing the film, I do sort of love that film.

Books That Will Change the Way You Think

To Kill a Mockingbird by Harper Lee
The Curious Incident of the Dog in the Night Time by Mark Haddon
Wonder by R.J. Palacio
The Perks of Being a Wallflower by Stephen Chbosky
A Street Cat Named Bob by James Bowen
The Book Thief by Markus Zusak
Naughts & Crosses by Malorie Blackman
Score: 2/7

I own The Perks of Being a Wallflower, I just haven’t read it yet. I’m currently reading The Book Thief so I don’t think that counts. A Street Cat Named Bob has just never appealed to me and I won’t be picking it up. However, I do want to read To Kill a Mockingbird and Wonder so they will be making their way to my TBR pile at some point.

Books That Will Transport You

The Great Gatsby by F Scott Fitzgerald
Percy Jackson Series by Rick Riordan
Northern Lights by Phillip Pullman
Lord of the Rings Trilogy by J.R.R. Tolkien
Harry Potter Series by J.K. Rowling
The Life of Pi by Yann Martel

Score: 2/6

I am currently reading the Percy Jackson series, and I’ve read the first 2 books but will be completing the series, so I’ve decided I can count that. Of course I’ve read Harry Potter! The Great Gatsby is on my TBR shelf waiting for me to get to it, I’ve attempted the read the Lord of the Rings however I just can’t get into The Fellowship of the Ring, I’ve tried so many times and yet The Hobbit is an easy read. I remember Northern Lights being popular to read in my early years of secondary school but it has never leaped out of me. I have The Life of Pi on my kindle, but I don’t know if I will get round to reading it, I know I should but I don’t really fancy it.

Books That Will Make You Cry

War Horse by Michael Morpurgo
The Time Travellers Wife by Audrey Niffenegger
Before I Die by Jenny Downham
Of Mice and Men by John Steinbeck
The Colour Purple by Alice Walker
The Kite Runner by Khaled Hosseini
My Sisters Keeper by Jodi Picoult

Score: 2/7

I will never be reading Of Mice and Men, my sister studied it for GCSE and told us a little about part of the story, and I was in tears, I cannot put myself through reading the whole book. I am likely to buy it and have it sat in my book cupboard though. The two I have read are The Time Travellers Wife and My Sisters Keeper, both are great books but I didn’t cry when reading The Time Travellers Wife, I don’t even think I cried when watching the film. I also prefer some of Jodi Picoults other books, I wouldn’t have chosen My Sisters Keeper to be in this list, but it is her most popular.

Books That Will Help You Understand You

The Knife of Never Letting Go by Patrick Ness
The Outsiders by S.E. Hinton
The Catcher in the Rye by J.D. Salinger
The Fault in our Stars by John Green
I Capture the Castle by Dodi Smith

Score: 1/5

I’ve only read The Fault in our Stars and I don’t rate it highly, everyone else seems to love it but it’s not for me. I am currently reading The Knife of Never Letting Go, I don’t know if I will complete it, I’m struggling to get into it so far, but we shall see. I want to read The Catcher in the Rye, and I Capture the Castle.

Books That Will Scare You

The Rats by James Herbert
The Demonata by Darren Shan
The Wasp Factory by Iain Banks
1984 by George Orwell
The Shining by Stephen King

Score: 0/5

I don’t do scary, so it doesn’t surprise me that I haven’t read any of these, though 1984 is on my list of books which I do want to read.

Books That Will Teach You About Love

Wuthering Heights by Emily Bronte
Forever by Judy Blume
The Diary of a Young Girl by Anne Frank
Jane Eyre by Charlotte Bronte
How I Life Now by Meg Rosoff
Pride and Prejudice by Jane Austen
Twilight by Stephanie Meyer

Score 6/7

The only one of these I haven’t read is Forever, and I don’t think I will be any time soon. I own 4 copies of Wuthering Heights in 3 different editions, so I think we can say it’s one I like. Although I’ve read Twilight it’s not a book which is in my collection any longer, and it won’t be returning.

Books That Will Thrill You

Gone by Michael Grant
City of Bones by Cassandra Clare
A Clockwork Orange by Anthony Burgess
Divergent by Veronica Roth
The Hunger Games by Suzanne Collins
Skulduggery Pleasant by Derek Landy
Rebecca by Daphne Du Maurier

Score: 4/7

I read City of Bones and enjoyed it but just couldn’t get into City of Ashes and so I won’t be completing the Mortal Instruments series. I have ordered the full Divergent Trilogy in matching covers, I currently have the movie edition of Divergent, and I don’t like it. I fancy reading Rebecca and A Clockwork Orange at some point but I will not be reading Skulduggery Pleasant.

Total Score: 18/50

I did say that I didn’t think I would have read many and I haven’t, but quite a few of them are on my list of books which I want to read once I’ve got my TBR pile down to a manageable amount.
