5 Foods that fight heartburn

Heartburn is usually caused when you suffer from GERD (Gastro-esophageal reflex disease).

Diet plays an important role while trying to combat heartburn, so that means you need to adopt a diet that is rich in fiber and low in fat.

You need to establish a timetable or schedule and stick to it, so that you don’t land up eating at odd hours and upset your digestive system and cause an acid reflux.

Here are 5 foods that fight heartburn:

- Applesauce

Applesauce

Replace oil with apple sauce. You don’t have to forego your favorite foods just because you have GERD. For example if a recipe calls for one cup of oil, replace it with apple sauce.

For first timer’s you might have to experiment with the consistency to get the dishes right.

- Oatmeal

Oatmeal

If you are used to having a heavy hearty breakfast of fried bacon, eggs and donuts that contain a lot of grease, its time you switched over to something that is high in fiber.

Oatmeal is rich in fiber and will not cause an acid reflux or heartburn as it does not contain any fat (minus oil) and as a matter of fact will soothe your stomach.

- Pasta

Pasta

Pasta is a great way to consume fiber and get rid of GERD. But unfortunately you cannot consume pasta with the usual tomato red sauce as that actually encourages an acid reflux.

Doctors recommend a light, thin white sauce for pasta. So unless you cannot do without the true Italian style of tomato based pasta, plain white pasta will do wonders for your fiber intake.

- Ginger

Ginger

Ginger is the age old grannie remedy for stomach problems. It is anti-inflammatory and so it does do your tummy a lot of good to eat a tiny piece each day.

Take great care not to eat too much, as it might cause heartburn due to the spice element in ginger.

- Beans

Beans

Beans are a great healthy alternative to meats. They are a great source of protein and fiber and will help reduce your acid reflux.

So do include these foods as part of your daily diet if you are suffering from GERD and can’t bear the torture of heartburn.
