5 Favourite Base Products

Base products are the makeup that I can’t bring myself to live without, along with eyeliner and mascara… and something to comb my brows. Ok so maybe I do love just about all makeup, but on a day to day basis when I don’t have the time to do nice eye makeup or a bright lip, I like to make sure that my skin is looking as good as it can be. With dry skin prone to redness, that can be hard, but here are five of my favorite base products that I find work well for me…

1. DiorSkin Nude BB Creme

I reviewed this product last January giving it a glowing review, and still feel the same about it now! It’s a lightweight, light coverage BB creme that is pale enough for even my white skin, and doesn’t cling to pesky dry patches. For everyday wear it’s absolutely perfect, providing just enough coverage to make your skin look natural and glowing yet still covering redness and any pesky spots you may have.

2. Dr Jart Regenerating Beauty Balm

This was my very first blog post on my blog, and still to this day I find myself recommending this beauty balm to everyone and anyone with dry skin. It’s quite thick for a beauty balm with a super nourishing formula, leaving your skin feeling plumped and hydrated but not too oily. This one isn’t as pale as the Dior one, and I wouldn’t recommend it for anyone paler than me, however it’s still a nice shade that I think would adapt from anyone as pale as myself to a medium skin tone. Not the best packaging to photograph, but when a product is as good as this Dr Jart BB cream who cares! Also, this one definitely has the up when it comes to lasting power, when I’m out all day at university it rarely shows signs of wearing off, only needing a dab of powder halfway through the day to keep it going.

3. YSL Youth Liberator Serum Foundation

One I am most likely to reach for on a special occasion or night out is the YSL Youth Liberator Serum Foundation, the best foundation I’ve ever worn to be photographed! There’s no SPF so you don’t have to worry about flashback, and the medium-high coverage is good enough to barely need any concealer yet still light and hydrating enough for dry skinned ladies to wear. I absolutely love it and I honestly would pay the hefty £36 price tag again once this runs out (if it ever does!) I have the shade B10 which I think is the lightest, neutral shade, however there are also the BR shades for more pink-toned skins. There’s a massive shade range so I would really recommend popping down to your local YSL counter and finding the perfect one to match you!

4. DiorSkin Nude Hydrating Concealer

I’m sorry, I know it’s another high end product but I never seem to get on well with high street brand face products! The DiorSkin Nude Hydrating Concealer goes perfectly with the BB creme mentioned above, the palest shade being a perfect match for the palest BB creme shade. You can see from the photos that this is certainly a well loved product, to the point where all of the writing has worn off! This is the only concealer I ever use, under my eyes, spots, redness, everywhere. It doesn’t cling to dry patches and doesn’t make under my eyes look super wrinkly like some awful ones can, and this little tube has actually lasted me ages so I don’t find £20-ish too bad for the amount of times I’ve used it.

5. The Body Shop All-In-One Instablur*

It took me a while to decide what I thought of this product but now I couldn’t bare to be without it. It’s essentially a primer that does everything; extends make-up wear time, minimises pores, hides blemishes and reduces shine. Now obviously if you have a giant red spot it’s not going to completely make it go away, but it definitely gives a blurring effect on your skin making everything seem more smooth, and just generally nicer looking. It really evens your complexion and gives you a better base to apply your makeup to.

What are your favorite base products? Send me links to any blog posts you’ve wrote about your favorite base, I’d love to get some ideas of what I should try next! :)
