A child’s imagination is limitless, conjuring up images of exotic, wild lands, heroes and villains, and fearsome monsters. Embrace your child’s pool of creativity by creating a wonderland right in their room and watch as their eyes light up in delight. There are many different ideas and themes to choose from when it comes to a child’s bedroom; so many, in fact, that it can become quite overwhelming. Below you will just five possible options to start you off; pack a bag because you’re going on quite the journey.
Jungle
We start our journey on the fringes of the great unknown; an impenetrable tangle of trees, vines and leaves that hides long-toothed, sharp-clawed beasts of prey, playful monkeys and huge, temperamental elephants. Whether your child channels a brave explorer or a resourceful Tarzan-type character, they will have hours of fun with a jungle-themed room. Create this environment by shopping for animal themed prints, wall decals featuring jungle characters and by painting trees and vines on the bedroom walls. Wooden or bamboo furniture, coupled with plush animals complete the look.
Under the Sea
Thoroughly scratched and parched from your jungle adventure, you dive headfirst into the cool, refreshing water of the ocean. Immersing yourself in the world under the sea, you are surrounded by inquisitive fish, spirited dolphins, lurking sharks and mammoth whales. Bring out the mermaid or swashbuckler in your child by painting the bedroom blue, adding images of aquatic animals, and featuring nautical-themed accessories, such as jars of sand, starfish and toy ships. To really impress your child, add a chest full of treasures; chocolate coins are always a winner.
Space
From one world to another. Grab your astronaut suit, check your oxygen supply and board the rocket promptly, because it’s time to head to outer space. Bouncing around the space ship one step at a time, you are suddenly knocked off course; a meteor shower has appeared and it’s up to you to save the day. A space-themed bedroom can be achieved through dark wall colours, dangling planets, glow-in-the-dark stickers and images of crazy aliens of all shapes and sizes. Let your imagination run wild.
Country Western
Landing back on earth with a thump, you notice that your surroundings are a lot more quaint and rustic. A lone tumbleweed rolls by, drawing your attention to the saloon across the dusty street. That’s right cowpokes and cowgirls, the vast, unexplored lands of the West surround you. Bring to life this era by incorporating mustards and browns into the color scheme of your room and adding accessories such as antique saddles, stick horse toys, wagon wheels and lassoes. Wooden furniture will make you feel as though you’re in a pioneer’s home, while a wanted poster with a picture of your child will give them a real thrill.
Arabian NightsHeading east now, your senses are overcome with the many sights, sounds and smells around you. Mysterious, cloaked figures pass by as merchants shout their wares at you and the blended aromas of spice and incense fill your nostrils. Let your child play the role of Aladdin or Jasmine by transforming their room into a scene from Arabian Nights. Working with colours such as turquoise, blue, gold and white, integrate authentic eastern décor by using large, plump cushions, ornamental rugs, pointed mirrors, plenty of silk and installing a canopy over the bed. For a child’s touch, add painted minarets, flying carpets, genies, and golden lamps on the walls. Fairy lighting is also an easy, inexpensive way to create a whimsical, romantic atmosphere.
While it does take effort, a themed room is a great way to inspire and educate your children. If you need a starting point, stores like Super A-Mart Australia stock a wide range of furniture items and homeware, so have a peruse and seek inspiration from their collections.
