Activity breaks are a great way of spending time with friends, and skiing is no exception. Challenging one another on the slopes is a fun way to bond, and the apres-ski activities are far more enjoyable when you’ve got someone to share them with.
There are great locations all over the world for a skiing getaway with friends, but if you’re finding it hard to narrow down your choices, take a look at three of the destinations that stand out as being particularly exceptional for groups of skiers.
Mayrhofen, Austria
Austria is a world-renowned skiing mecca, and the Tyrol region is especially well-known for its reliable snowfall, glorious views and excellent slopes. If you’re thinking of visiting the country for your group skiing break, have a look at what the resort of Mayrhofen has to offer.
The attractive Tyrolean village boasts a skiing area that includes 159 km of pistes and over 50 lifts. You’ll find more than 130 runs here, with over 40 being suitable for beginners, 75 catering for intermediate skiers and 15 perfect for those with advanced abilities.
When you’re not skiing you can have a go at some of the other activities on offer, like ice climbing, horse-riding or hang-gliding, or experience the lively apres-ski scene by calling in at one of the local bars. There are at least five in Mayrhofren and a couple more to be found in nearby Hippach, so you’ll have plenty of entertainment in the evenings.
Meribel, France
The resort of Meribel is slap bang in the center of the Three Valleys – one of the most popular ski areas in France and also among the country’s most attractive. The pistes here cover hundreds of kilometres and span several areas, including the main town, Meribel village and Meribel le Raffort.
You’ll find more than 270 runs throughout the area, including 101 for beginners and more than 140 for intermediate skiers. There are a number of snowboard parks too, for when you fancy a break from your skis.
Groups of friends or family members can have a go at all sorts of activities away from the slopes, such as bowling, swimming and walking, while there are lovely mountain restaurants to visit for a bite to eat. When evening falls, head to some of the many bars, or dance until dawn at the local nightclubs – if you have the energy!
Verbier, Switzerland
The most famous of Switzerland’s Four Valleys, Verbier is a traditional resort with unrivalled mountain views. This exclusive destination offers skiing opportunities for all skill levels, as well as schools where novices can pick up some tips.
Intermediate and advanced skiers are best catered for here, although there’s plenty to keep everyone happy, including an ice rink, indoor pool and the chance to go snowshoeing. If you’re traveling in a group, booking a chalet with a hot tub is a great way to get together at the end of a busy day and soak your aching muscles. Alternatively, if you’ve still got energy to burn, head to the local nightclub, or call in at one of the bars – the apres-ski scene in Verbier is second to none.
For nightlife and plenty of group activities for adults, the main resort is ideal, but if you’re traveling as a family group you might want to choose a smaller satellite resort that still offers excellent amenities without the lively evening scene.
