3 Tips for Decorating a Neutral Outdoor Living Space

By Adrienne Boswell @chiccalifornia1

Spring weather arrived in North Carolina over the weekend and we spent a good part of our weekend enjoying the backyard. It felt so good to be outdoors and enjoying the fresh air. And even though we are now entering pollenpocalypse season here (everything is covered in a layer of green pollen) I started thinking about evenings on our back deck enjoying the season. Seems I'm not the only one with that on my mind. I noticed that World Market is having a 40% off outdoor sale in preparation of back porch season. They have so many amazing deals right now. I decided to pull together neutral outdoor living space using all their sale items.

I'm loving all the white washed wood tones that are popular right now. We're really moving away from the gray washed trend and into a more light and airy coastal trend. And you know I'm all about that. If you're not really sure where to start when it comes to decorating your outdoor spaces here are a few tips.

  1. Keep your investment pieces neutral. Your investment pieces are the pieces that you will use season after season. So your outdoor sofa, table, side chairs etc are all pieces to keep neutral. When you keep the larger pieces neutral you won't be tired of them as the trends change.
  2. Add the trends with accessories. You're going to be seeing a lot of soft coastal blues this season when it comes to rugs, pillows, and other accessories. But next season we might be moving on to greens or pinks. If you love to decorate with the latest trends, the best place to add these is with your pillows, rugs and blankets. In general, outdoor accessories are a little more prone to the elements. So replacing or adding something new will probably happen anyway. There is also such an amazing variety of outdoor decor available these days and the prices make switching out the small items affordable
  3. Lighting is everything Nothing gets more oohs and ahh than a few strands of cafe lights. There is just something about the ambiance it creates that makes using your outdoor living space feel like a vacation destination. I guarantee the security spotlight in your backyard just doesn't have the same effect. If you can't string up cafe lights, use lanterns or even a few strands of white christmas lights to create the mood.

To help you pull together your outdoor living space, I've gathered up some of my favorite neutrals for the season. You can shop those by clicking on the pic and heading right over the the retailers website.
