27th Summer Universiade in Kazan!

It began two days ago on 7 July, the International University Sports Federation’s 27th Summer Universiade opened in Kazan, Russia.

Second only to the Olympics it size, the Universiade is largest University sport participation event in the world and will host over 10,400 University athletes from 162 countries in a variety of sports competitions.

So far on the third day of competition, Russian teams have captured 12 gold, 7 silver and 7 bronze medals so far in the opening days of the Summer Universiade 2013.

The games will continue to 17 July in the city known as the “third capital of Russia.

To host the events Russia built 27 new sports venues/stadiums for the event. The city of Kazan is the eight largest city in Russia with a population of 1.5 million and it is the capital of the Republic of Tatarstan. Kazan is 1,008 years old.

Known for its beautiful blue Mosque and old white Kremlin (fort), Kazan is a significant educational and cultural center of Russia. There are about 40 universities operating in the city. Among them there is the Kazan State University founded in 1804. Beautiful old Orthodox Churches also grace the city and Kazan is known as a place where Muslims and Christians live in peace.
