21 Years, 21 Miles, 21 Walkers

By Mmostynthomas @MostynThomasJou

In less than 24 hours’ time, Miles will be one of 21 walkers – including PACE’s founder and erstwhile director, Heather Last – tackling the Chiltern Ridgeway from Watlington to Wendover in celebration of PACE’s 21st anniversary.

Together they aim to raise £21,000 towards the costs of setting up a new PACE Early Years center at 156 Wendover Road near Aylesbury – the site which also serves as the finish line for tomorrow’s walk – where Isobel will have her sessions.

Looking at images of the Ridgeway on the web, you’d be fooled into thinking it is an easy stroll through a local Outstanding Area of Natural Beauty. Although it affords plenty of stunning panoramic views along the way, it is a strenuous, undulating route that dips in and out of valleys and cuts through beech woodland.

It’s a long way – almost as long as the London Marathon, and possibly just as hard work (even though participants will be going at a sedate pace of 3 mph). The cross-section of the land Miles will be covering tomorrow below shows how much the walk fluctuates at certain points: an elevation of as much as 856 feet, ascending a total of 948 feet over 21.5 miles.

The trek starts at 8am at the Watlington Carrier Arms with a bacon roll and coffee for breakfast. The next time Miles stops for a break will be lunch in Princes Risborough at 9.5 miles, aiming to finish at 156 Wendover Road at around 6pm.

Miles is well-equipped to tackle the Ridgeway. He has run six marathons in his life – five of which he won – and took part in the Square Mile Run 2000 in aid of Crisis.

Please sponsor Miles in his 21-mile trek today. You’d be helping us reach our personal target of £10,000, part of an ongoing campaign to ensure a funded place for our little girl year on year.
