Papa Andres 2015 Alegria Edition Review

You might be wondering why I’m reviewing an uber expensive rum on The Whiskey Jug. It’s because the 2015 Papa Andres Alegria Edition is a rum with a cause – to bring a higher quality of life to people in the Dominican Republic. 1,000 bottles of the $1,500 2015 Papa Andres Alegria Edition were crafted by their Maestra Ronera and 100% of the profits from their sale goes to the Brugal Foundation to enhance the lives of people living in the Dominican Republic.

Whether it’s building schools in underprivileged areas or setting up over 3,000 road signs to enhance local navigation, the Brugal Foundation was created to make the Dominican Republic, where Brugal Rum is made, a better place for all of its citizens. In a way they’re a bit like Robin Hood, but instead of robbing the rich they’re just asking them to hand over large chunks of cash in exchange for a limited edition bottle of Papa Andres Alegria Edition rum. I’d say that’s a much better deal for everyone involved.

2015 Papa Andres Alegria Edition Review

EYE
Rusty red

NOSE
Dense and thick with big dollops of molasses, dried cherries and that nice “rum funk” that appears in well made rums. Deep notes of brown sugar, spice, cocoa, charcoal and a light bit of astringency add some nice dimension to the aroma.

PALATE
Fruit cake, cinnamon heavy baking spice, brown sugar and more of that lovely molasses heavy rum funk. Mix in some dried cherries and a touch of cordite and you have yourself a dimensional, funky and fun rum.

FINISH
Medium fade of molasses, dried dark fruit, cough syrup and more of that great funk.

BALANCE, BODY & FEEL
Everything works well together giving it a nice balance and its medium body sports an oily texture.

OVERALL
The 2015 Papa Andres Alegria Edition is a tasty and aromatic rum and I want to thank the Eddington Group for allowing me to try this. Much like when The Macallan auctions off insanely old whisky for tens to hundreds of thousands of dollars and gives the proceeds to charity, this is a feel good dram.

It’s something that is designed to get people who have a lot give to those who don’t and by that nature alone it’s a fanatic glass of rum. So if you have $1,500 to spend on a rum then the 2015 Papa Andres Alegria Edition is a great value for both you and the people of the Dominican Republic.

SCORE: NA – Doesn’t feel right putting a number on charity, but I will say that I enjoyed it and it would rate well if I were to put a number on it.
