2013 DJCAD Degree Show: Jewellery and Metalwork Design

By Jollygoodstudio @JollyGoodStudio
It's one of my favorite times of year...degree show time! I kicked off the season with a trip to Duncan of Jordanstone College of Art and Design. A whole day was spent weaving my way along corridors and up and down stairs to try and make sure I didn't miss anything. I'm not quite sure I managed that but what I did see was very impressive.
It's really no surprise that jewelry was my favorite section. It's usually up there in my list but this year the Jewellery and Metalwork students really did shine. There was such a diverse selection of work. Just check these out:

What I also loved about the JAMD group was the innovative displays. This really lifted the pieces and also asked some interesting questions.
Kirsty Isla Nicholson asked people to help themselves to a ring, after donating what they thought it was worth, with her 187 rings installation. All the money was going to the Cystic Fibrosis Trust so that may have swayed the donations, but it would be really interesting to find out how much was raised in total.

I also loved the way some artists mixed with other mediums to display their jewelry. Rachel Bruce pinned her brooches to some really cute canvases, which has now given me an idea of how to solve my brooch storage woes.

And Anais Paulard used video to show the depth behind her pieces that would have been difficult to see from the still pieces alone. This really brought the jewelry alive and each video beautifully suited the mood of the piece it was showcasing.

While Zoe Davidson's underwater display fitted with her jewelry collection perfectly.

Now picking a favorite would be pretty much impossible but the display that affected me the most had to be Ali Taylor's. I can't believe I almost didn't notice this little room off to the side. The display was amazing and really stood out. The ideas behind the pieces were strong and the aesthetic was just up my street.

Of course I left with a few treats (even though I would have added to my collection, given the funds). As a reward for putting into the JAMD Kickstarter collection I got lovely black diamond brooch which I collected while at the degree show. And I couldn't pass Kirsty's wall without donating and picking a fabulous ring.

This is a mega blog post and I wasn't even able to fit all the amazing work. Check out the website for the full list jewelry students.
Did you make it along to the degree show? Who were your favorite jewellers?
