Ice cube trays are an amazing invention. They can be used for several purposes other than freezing water. You will get them in varieties of plastic and silicon. Now that you have automatic ice makers in most new refrigerators, doesn’t mean that these old ice trays have become obsolete.
You can put them to good use in the following ways:
1) Bite sized bakes
If you want mini bite sized bakes for your kitty party or kids sleepover then consider baking food in your silicone ice cube tray.
Mix the ingredients as instructed and bake. It’s hard to resist mini bites that look and taste just as good.
2) Eggs
Do you just hate it when you have to throw away eggs because of the expiry date or you can’t store them at room temperature for too long?
The best solution now is to crack the eggs and pour them into ice trays to freeze. You can put whole egg or separate the yolks from the whites.
3) Herbs
If you want to enjoy fresh herbs all-round the year then freezing fresh herbs might be the best idea you have come across. You can freeze any herb you want.
Just make sure you pack the trays 2/3rd with herbs and 1/3rd with olive oil.
4) Ice Tea and Cold Coffee
If you are fond of ice tea and cold coffee just freeze any leftover black tea and coffee in ice cube trays. This way you don’t let your cold coffee or ice tea get diluted as what happens as with the case of water cubes.
5) Tomatoes
When tomatoes are in season and are at their best flavors puree them and pour them into ice cube trays. Pop these frozen cubes while cooking as and when you need them.
6) Chocolate
Pour melted chocolate into ice cube molds and let them freeze. Drop them into hot plain milk and enjoy the flavor explosion when the chocolate melts in the hot milk.
7) Floral Herbal Cubes
Imagine dropping cubes of flowers into your drinks! They create a pretty picture while serving drinks. Don’t worry there are flowers that are edible too.
Simply freeze the flowers in the drink that you are going to serve or in just plain lime juice or water and pop into the glass of drinks.
These cubes will be a hit at any party.
8) Organize drawer
Do you have a million tiny little things in your drawer? Is it hard to keep them organized? Not to worry. Ice cube tray can help sort your tiny little knick knacks from earrings to buttonsand much more.
9) Stock
Sometimes we just make a little extra stock and it seems a shame to pour it away or stash it in the fridge where it remains forgotten.
Freeze it in ice cube tray and use it for your cooking as and when needed. The best part is that these small cubes defrost faster.
10) Baby food
It can be quiet a hassle to prepare fresh food all the time for babies, especially if you are a working mom. Simply make the pureed food and freeze in ice cube trays. Thaw just the amount of cubes that you need. That way the rest of the puree stays longer.
