Three years after the clone wars the Jedi Knights are spread across the galaxy, this is intensified as Darth Sidious has his own plans and everything is about to change when he meets Anakin Skywalker.
In all honesty I was very interested about this film, I mean yes I had heard that it is the worst of the Star Wars films but I really had no idea how Anakin went on to become Darth Vader. I mean why did he wear the mask and breathe the way he does? Ok I know that sounds like a very strange thing but was interested to see how exactly it all happened. This film does answer all of those questions and would have been a lot better if Hayden Christensen could actually act instead of being very rigid throughout. I don’t know if I think he was worse in this one or Clones.
So Anakin is extremely moody from the off and we can see he is truly starting to crack and getting drawn towards the dark side. He is secretly married to Padme and she has just found out she is pregnant. I mean come on how on earth did they really keep all of that a secret? I know in the end she did confide in Obi-Wan but that’s not the point. That final scene of the twins arriving and Anakin becoming Darth Vader was a pretty cool way to do it in my opinion.
Anakin is haunted by his dreams which he is terrified are going to come true after his mother, so when he sees Padme dying in childbirth it really pushes him over the edge. I think we really to have to sympathise with Obi-Wan as you can really understand why he is so disappointed with Anakin and doesn’t want to actually fight him. Which would have been a really great scene if it then hadn’t been for Christensen then being over dramatic and trying too hard. I know the poor guy cannot win but he really is bad!
The thing with this film is that it certainly does have some very important moments and developments which are needed to then link everything to A New Hope. It’s ok to still be confused to why they decided to start at episode four isn’t it? I mean come on that still makes no sense at all! But I actually think that I enjoyed this one more than Attack of the Clones, mainly because it does have that much darker edge and doesn’t attempt to re-do the “love” story. It really could have been so much better though so I think its disappointment more than anything from me.
