Star Wars: Episode II – Attack of the Clones (2002) Review

10 Years have passed and Anakin Skywalker is well into his Jedi training with master Obi-Wan Kenobi although he is starting to get ahead of himself and cracks are beginning to show. Especially when he is reunited with Padme . . .

The main focus of this film does seem to be the start of the forbidden romance between Anakin and Padme, I think the film would have been more bearable if Hayden Christensen’s performance hadn’t been so bad. Like you really do have to see to believe how much of a cardboard cut out he seems to be from the first moment we see him in the film. Honestly if you thought Jake Lloyd was awful then I dread to think how you found Hayden! Because let’s face it the romance could have been really good as we just know how important it is to the overall story.

So Anakin is starting to get frustrated that he is not getting his own way and that he is much more powerful than he was before. He feels that Obi-Wan is holding him back and preventing him from using his powers, this has to be the start of showing that he is going to become something or someone else. As well as the romance which comes about when Anakin is given the job to protect Pademe, at the same time Obi-Wan was on a mission to find the bounty hunter who was hired to kill her.

This mission leads him to uncovering different things that he really did not expect, like a clone army? Although this is very disappointing due to the fact that the army does not look very impressive. Overuse of CGI I reckon it just takes the edge off it all. He is haunted by the nightmares of his mother.

The film isn’t all bad, I mean the story is pretty good and we have Christopher Lee who let’s face it is always good! But the acting from Christensen really does not make it an easy watch. He is just too difficult to like or even get away. Which is a massive shame really as it did have potential to be a good installment.

It does have quite a few things to follow with and I will admit that it has taken a couple of viewings to be able to understand what was going on, it got a little bit better watching it for the second time. Yes really, I seemed to get it a little bit more. Not saying that I then thought it was fantastic though, but all of the different characters and planets are pretty confusing in all honesty! I don’t think we get enough Lightsaber action as I really do enjoy those scenes, I mean come on they are cool weapons!
