Half Marathon Training Week Two

By Heathernichole
I learned a very valuable lesson during my second week of half marathon training. Running outside is so much easier than running on the treadmill. I used to prefer running on the treadmill. Last year that was where I did 95% of my training. I remember a friend referring to it as the dreamill one day and I did not understand what she meant. Well, now I do!

I ran four miles outside on Monday and it was a great run! I did experience some discomfort in my left knee while going uphill so I ended up walking for a few minutes until I was back on a flat surface. I finished those four miles in less than fifty minutes and that was my goal.

I ran three miles outside on Tuesday. Funny story. My fiancé ended up seeing me on my run while he was driving home. He pulled up next to me and rolled down his window and started yelling, “Hey hot stuff! Need a ride?” He drove next to me as I continued to run. He asked me a few more times if I wanted a ride home but I told him I was almost done and I needed to finish. The old me would have jumped in his car so fast but right now I am determined to get my miles in.
Half Marathon Training Week Two
Thursday evening and yesterday (Saturday) afternoon I ran three miles on the treadmill. My run on Thursday was half good half bad. About a mile and a half in I felt so strong. I felt like I was flying! Then mile two hit and I was miserable. It’s so weird how things can change so quickly. And then yesterday I was miserable for the whole three miles. It took everything I had in me to finish. I can not run on the treadmill anymore. I’m going to work out my schedule so that I don’t have to run in the heat because it’s still in the low 90’s here.

This morning I was wide awake at 5:50. I decided to get up and eat breakfast so I could get my run in before it got too hot outside. I left my apartment at 6:30 and I had a great run. The only discomfort I experienced this morning was in my nose. The air was crisp and dry and every time I breathed in, my nose burned. I wish I could breathe in and out through my mouth but that usually leads to cramping so I try to breathe in through my nose and out through my mouth. The burning sensation did slow me down a bit but I finished my four miles. My total mileage for the week was seventeen.

After my run I cleaned myself up and put another set of gym clothes on. Today I wore my new tank top from my mom and dad. #futuremrsmeyer They special ordered me another top as well but I’ll wait to show that one off. My fiancé and I went to the gym and we did chest and triceps.
