Friday Box Office: ‘Purge’ is Dramatically Overperforming, ‘Internship’ #3?

Posted on the 07 June 2013 by Sirmac2 @macthemovieguy

#1- The Purge- 16.5M Friday, 33M weekend
The Purge is dramatically overperforming, headed for 16.5 million today causing the prediction to leap to 33M for the weekend. It managed to do 3.4 million last night in midnight screenings, outperforming even The Hangover 3. The sales are so high that even Fandango has classified it as a “true phenomenon”.

#2- Epic
Epic is tracking in 2nd place for the day, as more and more schools are out for the summer. Numbers coming later.

#3- The Internship- 8-9M Friday, 22M weekend
It looks like the Owen Wilson/Vince Vaughn comedy isn’t quite hitting it off the way the studio hoped it would. Right now, its tracking below Purge, and apparently below Epic. If these grosses hold, and Epic holds, it will have actually increased from last week to this week (a rare feat). Meanwhile, Internship managed only 800K in midnights. Ouch.

Here’s how some others are shaping up:

#4- Fast and Furious 6- 16M weekend
#5- Now You See Me- 15M weekend
#6- After Earth- 13M weekend
#7- The Hangover 3- 12M weekend
