While hunkered down for Hurricane Sandy, G-Lo and Co. paid us a visit. Having been raised right, he did not come empty-handed. He had stocked up on a trip to the Foodery and brought over a bottle of the Green Flash’s Friendship Brew and Ommegang’s Scythe and Sickle Harvest Ale. I have had their Hennepin and their Three Philosophers before and had missed out the opportunity to attend the Scythe and Sickle Event at Devil’s Den. So, I was familiar with the brewer and after Jay’s review of the event, I was looking forward to the Scythe and Sickle.

Here is what Ommegang has to say about this beer:

Scythe and Sickle is Ommegang’s foray into honoring the harvest season. Using barley, oats, wheat, and rye, we’ve brought the mood of fall to life with vibrant and flavorful passion. Farming is about precision, timing and care. At Ommegang we place the same emphasis a farmer has for his crops into the creation of our beers. Scythe and Sickle is a testament to the craft and care of farming, from which our farmstead-brewed beers benefit greatly. Brewed with balance in mind, Scythe & Sickle reveals a smooth and creamy mouthfeel with light toastiness and gentle sweetness. Bright amber in color from the mixed malts, the beer is balanced with delicate hopping to counter rather than overpower the malt profile.

I found this beer to be…

  • Appearance: Golden Amber with a little bit of foam and a lot of lacing.
  • Aroma: Malt, yeast and spice.
  • Taste: Creamy with mild carbonation; not a lot of flavor but very well-balanced.
  • ABV: 5.8%

I couldn’t discern the barley, oats, wheat, and rye individually but I found this too be very nice. It was just very easy drinking and certainly better than the onslaught of pumpkin beers that hit this time of year. I really enjoyed this beer.
