Zen and the Art of Wardrobe Maintenance

By Linsibrownson @CleverSpark

I’m not sure when it was, exactly, that I started keeping my closet organized, but I’m sure it probably began on a Sunday – a.k.a. Laundry Day. Doing laundry is definitely not my favorite chore, but I figured I might as well capitalize on the domestic momentum and organize my closet as well.

Washing one’s clothing is so culturally primitive, yet it’s a function most of us still perform. You gather up all your soiled clothing, sort by whatever method you use, launder, then return those garments back to their proper spot. It’s a chore that doesn’t lend well to multi-tasking, which is why it’s a good opportunity to take inventory in more ways than one.

First, you’re taking inventory of the obvious; how many garments do I have, are they in good condition, etc. After all, we spend so much money on clothing, it’s a good idea to track our investment.

But also, it’s a good way to take inventory of the image you’re presenting. For example, if you’re washing the same 7 items of your wardrobe over and over, it’s a good idea to ask yourself why you’re only wearing those items. The answer usually comes down to a matter of comfort – both physical and mental.

Whatever you’re wearing repeatedly is a good indicator of what’s going on in your life. So, if you feel like you need a change, then stop relying on the same “comfort” items and make an effort to wear more of your wardrobe. Trying out new combinations will excite your brain and, before you know it, your subconscious will start to make improvements in other parts of your life.

A good way to start this is to plan your outfits for the rest of the week. Use your phone to take photos to remind yourself.
