Young Magic are well-known for fusing their percussive “field notes,” an array of location-specific sounds from around the world, and original soul-psychedelic recordings to create experimental, electronic dream pop. Their latest track, “Lucien”, uses these elements to give the electronic genre an ethereal makeover. “Lucien” has a scarcer backdrop than Young Magic’s previous tracks, but the song’s mixture of sounds, which include a plunking harp, a muffled beat, and staccato breaths, return the band to their psychedelic roots. On top of this, Melati Malay’s repetitive, vaporous vocals ride the line between physical and mystical, suggesting an almost extraterrestrial connection. “Lucien” is all at once dreamy, eerie and otherworldly, alluding to another life and transporting Young Magic’s music into a world of its own.
