As soon as I heard Brooklyn-based Young Heel‘s new single “Not A Name”, I was captivated. Building off the dream-pop, shimmery layered beats on their debut EP, Falls, “Not A Name” takes a slightly darker, more mature turn. The electronic backing vocals immediately reminded me of Imogen Heap, but the breaking waves of sound in the chorus are similar to what you hear in a lot of popular electronic dance music, making the track more unique.
What keeps “Not A Name” from going in Spring Breakers territory, though, is the honest way the vocals are delivered. The way the intensity builds around the main line in the chorus, “Somehow is not a name for us,” is so emotional that it puts Young Heel into the beautiful Bon Iver territory of electronic music rather than the EDM vein. The combination of synths, thoughtful lyrics and intense vocals makes “Not A Name” a song that doesn’t neatly fit in the pop or indie spaces, but hangs somewhere beautifully in between.
“Not A Name” is the first single off Young Heel’s forthcoming LP. If you’re in the NYC area, catch the band at Pianos on August 16th.
