Remember yesterday when I wrote about how you learn to appreciate things when they’re out of your reach? Well, funny enough, I had no voice when I woke up this morning. This indeed is one of those things you never think of living without (reminds me of the time I had my knee operated and I couldn’t walk; my friends called me the Forrest Gump for months). And since I live by myself, I only realized this when I tried to say ‘Good morning’ to the receptionist downstairs. This happens to me every year around this time, when I catch the pre-Christmas cold. Working today has been quite amusing, answering the phone just useless. As I know I’m not the only one with this seasonal flu so here are a few reminders of the cold-reliefs:
I have a quite a many German friends and about 90 % of them always tell me to drink Jagermeister when I’m sick. And why? Because it’s made of herbs, roots, and spices. A shot a day keeps the doctor away huh? My personal preference however is a hot whiskey with a slice of lemon, carnation seeds and honey.

Ginger, ginger and ginger. Traditional Chinese medicine has used ginger for ages and it contains a dozen antiviral compounds. It’s easy to use, you can add it grated or in pieces to drinks, yoghurt, chocolate, soups… you name it. Garlic is another spice you can easily add to your food and it has almost the same effect (do not try this if you need a fast cold relief before a big date though). Some articles also say that adding spice in general (eg. chili) in your food could help.
Fill a bowl with hot water and add drops of eucalyptus essential oil, lean over the bowl your head covered with a towel and breathe in. This actually is good for your skin too, as the steam adds moisture and helps cleansing the skin of impurities. One of the cheapest home spa -treatments!
Enjoy being able to stay in bed for the whole day! Watch a season of your favorite TV series or have a movie marathon under a warm blanket with a warm water bottle. Remember to drink a lot of fluids, especially if you have a fever (you can easily get dehydrated). Keep your head higher than your body by adding extra pillows. Enjoy bed, you’ll be back in the office in no time.
