The London-based indie label so i buried is set to release a split 7″ in May featuring two bands you’ve probably never heard of but probably should. The release is split between acid-folk solo project, Grimm Grimm, and an experimental duo, Tapers, both of whom are reaching into extremely interesting sonic terrain. Both bands lean towards the baroque, yet with different postures. Grimm Grimm’s “Hazy Eyes Maybe” is actually definitely hazy, with a Beatles melody, Youth Lagoon fuzz and a high brow yet unavoidably mellow arrangement. Tapers’ composition is progressive with loose and rambling classical elements. Their “Untitled 11″ wanders into abandoned amusement parks with lo-fi, eerily-beautiful fluidity.
The split’s cover art is something to stare at for quite some time, all the while wondering what the story is but never gaining an answer. That sentiment is the same for the featured bands, as they both allude to something intensely graceful and wondrous, yet never fully reveal what it is they’re describing. This provides a gentle tension and novel mystique to the already adventurous sounds. The joy isn’t in the destination, but the scenic view on the way to nowhere, anywhere. The odds of getting your hands on a physical split is low seeing as they’re only releasing 100 copies, but Soundcloud has got your back. Listen to Grimm Grimm’s “Hazy Eyes Maybe” above for a taste.
