What do you all think of this? Google Maps now takes you into the heart of the Amazon rainforest. My reaction is split:
1) Great! I’ve always been interested in learning more about the rainforests and I think people being able to access information about them will lead to increased understanding and eventually recognition that we need to protect these natural treasures.
2) No! Now yet another part of the planet is open for billions of people to explore. Eventually some of them will visit and/or dream up ways to exploit its vast resources without thought for the land. I wish there were still some areas on the planet that people would just leave alone.
If you’re like me, you feel conflicted. The pictures are stunning and I love the fact that technology now allows me to sit in my house or pick up a smartphone and access some of the most pristine and remote places in the world. At the same time, I want a few patches of grass or stands of trees that are far from the reach and influence of human beings. Is it possible to have both?
Where do you fall on this issue?
