Ever think that this might be the team you are coaching?
We’ve all been there. Young players at all levels will drive you nuts. How many of you CAN’T say that the following things happened in one of your games:
- You scratch and claw to get back into the game only to have your pitcher walk the next three batters he faces.
- With runners on 2nd and 3rd, your batter takes two fastballs right down the middle and then swings at a curveball in the dirt.
- You spend 30 minutes on pitchers covering first base on a Monday. In Tuesday’s game, a ball is hit to the first baseman and the pitcher stays on the mound.
- Up by a run with runners on 2nd and 3rd with two outs, the batter hits an easy one hop back to the pitcher who proceeds to throw it over the first baseman’s head.
- Down multiple runs late in the game, your runner on second base gets picked off.
- Your fourth hitter comes to the plate with runners on first and second and tries to lay down a base hit bunt.
- A batter on the other team flails at and misses curveballs all game long. In the last inning with runners on second and third your pitcher throws a fastball right down the middle. It gets crushed.
- The other pitcher throws four consecutive pitches out of the strike zone and your next batter swings at the first pitch out of the zone.
I could go on and on and I’m sure you could too.
My dad always said, “the game will drive you crazy if you let it.” To coach a long time, you better have a good sense of humor.
