Earlier this fall, we were very fortunate to welcome Yellow Ostrich (@yellowostrich), one of my favorite Brooklyn bands, into our Ditmas Park home studio for a highly anticipated ‘Honey I’m Home’ session. Originally the lo-fi bedroom pop creation of frontman Alex Shaaf, the project now boasts a much richer sound with the addition of Michael Tapper (previously of We Are Scientists) on drums, Jon Natchez on horns and Shaaf’s masterful use of his looping machine (which was purposely excluded for this recording). Yellow Ostrich is a recent add to the Barsuk Records family, which re-released their glorious sophomore LP, Mistress.
Enjoy both “Hold On” and “Campaign” below and please download the MP3s for free as well. Also, if you feel so inclined, you can dive into our sessions “vault” for previous videos with bands such as Freelance Whales, Pepper Rabbit, Gardens & Villa, Tokyo Police Club, and more (see them all here).
In case you don’t notice when you watch the videos, we had our friend Caitlin Raftery (@caitraft) paint a Yellow Ostrich themed mural on the wall to celebrate the occasion. A very big thank you to her as well as Derek Eads for his illustration above. You can buy his prints and shirts here. Thanks to both Ian Hultquist and Gabriel Stanley for filming with me.
Please click the “like” button below if you dig what you see. Thanks so much for continuing to support our live sessions!
‘Honey I’m Home’ is a live session series made by The Wild Honey Pie. With each new episode, we welcome a different band into Sounds Like A Fire home studio in Brooklyn and record intimate versions of two or three songs which are given away for free.
