Xavier Rudd

Xavier Rudd

Rudd playing all instruments himself.

Years ago Christina had introduced me to Xavier Rudd.  I had never heard a didgeridoo before and Christina put his music into my cd player during an exchange of artists we listened to.  I immediately felt drawn to the To Let album that she played.  She then explained to me that Rudd played all of the instruments by himself at one time.  He no longer does this though, Glenda tells me that it is because it was bad on his knees.  Glenda is who I am visiting with in Australia right now.

Wait a minute, so Glenda knows whether or not Xavier Rudd has bad knees or not?  I’ll explain.

Christina was born and raised in Philadelphia and while in Philly she had gone to the Live-Aid show with her aunt.  That is how she was introduced to Rudd.  A year later she would work with me in Florida and I too would become a fan of his music and would later see him in concert in New Orleans in 2005 (when he still played all instruments himself… at the same time) and again in Orlando in 2010 (when he disappointingly would not and now has a back-up band).  To appreciate his earlier talent that drew me in check out his album Solace.

So back to Glenda.  Glenda knows him because Xavier Rudd grew up here in Torquay.  It turns out that she has known him since we was a boy.  When she told me I was something like oh wow that’s cool and then I went about my business.  I’ve never really been one to get star struck.  So today I was working along the beach.  Glenda had dropped me off for several hours and I had been removing some weed along the dunes here in Torquay.  It was an easy task and I enjoyed being outside near the beach.  A couple of hours went by and I had a jumbo-bag of weeds hoisted over my shoulder.  As I was walking to the drop off point, which was quite a ways away, I had my iPod on random.  I have a few thousand songs loaded onto the iPod right now and ironically enough Xavier Rudd came on.  I didn’t pay any attention to it and then I couldn’t help but laugh.
