Would Audrey Hepburn Have Preferred Blue Eyes?

They’ve written many a song about brown-eyed beauties. Furthermore, the likes of Audrey Hepburn and Halle Berry have prompted many a peeper envy. So when I learned of a beauty procedure that can turn brown eyes blue, I was, well, amazed…and a bit miffed (okay, mostly miffed). Aside from the fact that my eyes are deep brown, I’m a firm believer that ones eye color ranks up there with unique-to-you physical characteristics like much relished beauty marks and imperfectly perfect smiles. Listen, I’m all about the most cutting edge beauty procedures and love to dabble in the latest makeup trends, skin care topicals, and even a cellulite treatment or two. I’m a lover (or, at the very least, an appreciator) of all things beauty (from over-the-counter products to medi-spa regimens). But there’s something about permanently changing one’s eye color…it just seems like such a….waste (did I mention I’m partial to brown eyes?).

A doctor in Laguna Beach claims that by using laser technology one can turn their brown eyes blue…permanently. Dr. Gregg Homer has been perfecting this technology for a decade and says you can go from brown to blue in a matter of two to three weeks. A laser is used to remove the pigment from the iris. Then when the body sheds the altered tissue, the brown pigment is permanently gone leaving you with blue gazers.

They say the eyes are the windows to the soul. I’ve always been partial to that adage, as I believe a person’s eyes (and eye color) tell you a lot about them. Dr. Homer was quoted in saying, “A blue eye is not opaque, you can see deeply into it, and a brown eye is very opaque. I think there is something very meaningful about this idea of having open windows to the soul.” Hmm. If I were a betting girl, I’d be willing to bet the farm that the author of that well-known adage didn’t have a particular color in mind for the “windows to the soul.”

The price tag for this peeper changing procedure will be around $5,000. However, before this cosmetic treatment is offered to the public, clinical trials will be the next step.

So, brown eyed mavens…would you change your eye color to blue, given the choice? Perhaps I’m a bit risk adverse (read: a total chicken when it comes to the idea of lasering my pupils), but wouldn’t colored contacts be an easier, cheaper route? I think I’ll save the iris transformation for Tom Cruise, Minority Report ll…
