World History Detective from Critical Thinking Review!

By Upatdawn @lisakeva
Surprisingly my 11 year old REALLY got into this workbook.
GASP!  A workbook for history?
Yes!  Honestly, I was just as surprised!  World History Detective  has 78 Civilizations to learn in self-guided chronological order.
World History Detective from Critical Thinking Review!"World History Detective® can be used as a standards-based, stand-alone textbook, a resource of supplemental activities to enrich another textbook, or as a review course for older students. Students begin by analyzing a lesson. Next, they apply critical thinking skills to answer multiple choice and short essay questions. Finally, students support their answers by identifying evidence learned from the lesson. This book, which includes geographical maps, timelines, and concept maps, develops critical thinking skills in lessons that teach the role technology, power, institutions, ideas, and trade play in shaping history."

My son really like the condensed and concise information about civilizations filled with great maps, timelines, deductive question and concept maps.  (Though he wasn't crazy about the written response sections, but, that's another story!)
We skipped lessons 1-4 which contained Prehistoric information and started with The Fertile Crescent and the Sumerians.

As stated above, the information presented is factually based and could have come from a less-than-starchy text book, but, in true Critical Thinking style, challenges the student to distinguish between fact and opinion and provide evidence for their answer.
The lessons are very well put together and I have to admit, interesting.  Book 1 covers Prehistory, Ancient, Medieval and Early American Civilizations.
Suggested for grades 6-7, this book could be stretched over two years with some additional reading and hands-on activities added.  But, my son will easily finish it in one year!
I received a copy of this book free of charge for an honest review.SPECIAL OFFER FOR Homeschool Circus SUBSCRIBERS through October 31: Use code LISAtips for a $19.99 discount when you buy any curriculum CD Library plus Spanish Empire library.
