World Color Press

Posted on the 12 January 2020 by Hmcurator

Sorry for not posting last weekend, I was working on the Harvey Mercheum exhibit pages. I have now completed converting the 2015 exhibits to Gutenberg blocks and printouts to PDFs. I still have to combine all of these PDFs into a 2015 Exhibit Guide.

While I was busy with this project, Comic Book Historians posted a YouTube video to their Facebook page of a 1977 tour of the Sparta, Illinois World Color Press plant:

The year after this video, I would start collecting Richie Rich comics. Two years more brings us to today’s bit of Harveyana. The video mentions Marvel and DC, but Harvey Comics also used World Color Press. One of the prized items in the permanent collection is a shipping box from the same Sparta, Illinois World Color Press plant to Mr. Leon Harvey:

This is not just an empty cardboard box. According to the seller, there are 140 copies of Richie Rich Best of the Years digest #6 (June 1980) inside! Why it is 140 and not a gross I am not sure.

I hope you enjoyed this look at World Color Press. More exhibits to come next week!
