It’s a little late in the season to be talking about coats. Fashion has never been in step with the weather which is why you find coats hitting the stores in August and spring clothes starting to hit the stores in January. It’s ludicrous. However, there is a benefit to stores not moving with the seasons: Sales!

Sales are the best times for investment purchases and a coat for work can definitely be one of those purchases. Despite there being many cold winter days ahead, each day more coats will hit the sale rack. Start keeping your eyes on your favorite coats because they will likely be on sale soon.

Make an Entrance with Powerful Workplace Coats

First impressions are everything. I have written about first impressions. If a bad first impression is made, it takes eight subsequent good impressions to have a person change their opinion about you. Workplace coats can often be the first visual impression you will make on your co-workers, bosses or clients. There are just so many flat, boring, cheap looking coats out there. Don’t get lost in the crowd with a coat that isn’t memorable.

Before we get into the coats, I have a new style video to share with you. This tip can be particularly helpful if you worry you have too many coats.

Five Workplace Coat Outfits that will Make a Kick A$$ Impression

Here are five different looks using coats that will leave an impression on all you come into contact with. Shop for more styles at the end of this post.

Coat Outfit #1

This sophisticated lightweight double face coat from Hobbs is an elegant style that will work with pants and dresses. I styled the coat with a burgundy dress from BOSS and finished the look with taupe croc print patent pumps, a teal bag from Frame and knot earrings from Kendra Scott.

Women tend to shy away from buying statement coats. I understand the logic as it does make sense to choose coats with greater versatility. However, staying too safe with choices can also create tremendous boredom. We need fun purchases to add excitement and avoiding novelty altogether can be just as detrimental to creating a balanced wardrobe as having too much of it.

I styled this eye-catching geometric colorblocked coat from The Fold that is majorly on sale. I styled the coat with a grey long sleeve gray midi sweater dress and finished the look cognac suede boots, a grey tote and a chain necklace from Laura Lombardi.

I love a pop of color in coats. To quote Emeril Lagasse, they’re so, “BAM!”

I have yet to meet a woman who took a chance with a bold color coat and regretted the purchase. If you have considered purchasing a bold colored coat for work, perhaps this outfit will inspire you. I styled this fuschia coat from Ted Baker with black wide-leg pants from L’Angence and a structured tweed peplum top from Theory that I layered under a cropped cardigan from Hobbs. I finished the outfit with spectator pumps from Enzo Angiolini, a black bag from Reiss and pearl station necklace from Lagos.

Professional Coat Outfit #4

Cinzia Rocca is a popular coat brand among my clients. They never cease to make functional coats that are also chic, stylish and timeless. This winter white style comes in missy and plus size. I know winter white is a shade most women avoid, but there is something about a woman who chooses to wear it anyway.

I styled this coat with a pair of navy culottes and top from The Fold to create this monochromatic look and finished the outfit with navy booties from Boden, red handbag from Tory Burch and ear jackets from Madewell.

If you’re reluctant to buy a coat that is specific or too bold, a black and white plaid coat from Ramy Brook is eye-catching and can also be treated as a solid black coat. It’s the best of both worlds.

I styled the coat with this fun Equipment jumpsuit, studded black booties, a handbag from See by Chloé and tiered drop stone necklace from Hobbs.
