In an effort to better understand why certain words remain after thousands of years, Mark Pagel from the University of Reading measured 200 words that shared a similar 10,000-year history. The oldest and most stable words are those used most often in daily speech, such as “I,” and are represented in the center of the chart, while the younger words are on the outskirts.
