Winter Holiday Inspiration – Christmas Markets Salzburg

By Cassiefairy @Cassiefairy

Now that Halloween is out of the way, and I’ve already been to a fireworks display – the next thing on my list is officially Christmas! I have always thought a winter holiday would be the perfect way to welcome winter and get over the cold weather blues. Sadly, I don’t think we’ll be getting away this year, but that doesn’t stop me from daydreaming about where I’d love to go.

After doing a little research into different winter holiday destinations, I decided that the perfect winter get away for us would be a trip to the Christmas markets in Salzburg, Austria. One of my best friends is off to visit the Christmas markets in Rome at the start of December and I am already so jealous! There are lots of different winter break options, from skiing to city breaks but if I was to plan a snowy getaway it would definitely include some culture and festive shopping.

Salzburg have some of the best Christmas markets in Europe, there are several scattered across the city to wander around with a warming cup of Glühwein. Amongst the cosy streets and welcoming squares there are stalls filled with Christmas goodies including foods, gifts and traditional Christmas decorations. I can almost smell the roasted chestnuts and spiced Glühwein! I’ve heard that carol singers and brass bands add to the festive atmosphere.

Salzburg has lots to offer besides the fabulous Christmas markets, there is plenty of culture and history with a variety of museums to explore, perfect for when it gets a bit chilly. The Salzburg Museum would be my first stop to find out a bit more about this historic city, next stop the museum of contemporary art which the husband would love. The stunning baroque cathedral and Mirabell Palace would also be up there on my ‘to-see’ list.

The birthplace of Mozart, Salzburg is the perfect place to indulge in some classical music and there are regular concerts held across the city. The 15th century city hall has also been turned into a museum, which is home to some of Mozart’s instruments!

Bustling markets and festive cheer sound like the perfect way to welcome winter. Is it too early for a glass of Glühwein?
