I couldn’t be more excited about this track even if I had my fourth black coffee for the morning. Old touring partners Willis Earl Beal and the mighty Cat Power have collaborated on a light-hearted sounding yet quite bitterly intended diddy titled “Coming Through”. Beal maintains his understated instrumentation (just drums and guitar) whilst bringing charisma to the tune with his soulful and much loved blues-inspired vocals. Featuring some fairly hearty lyrics — “Morality and virtue could easily hurt you, so don’t pick a side just ride the tide, there are no lies when your realize that truth will soon be coming through.” The track has a much deeper intention than its outer appearance first suggests. The addition of Cat Power’s cloudy backup vocals brings an air of freshness to the track, making it the perfect soundtrack for a slow-burning Sunday morning. It’s clearly a partnership made in heaven.
Willis Earl Beal’s full length album, Nobody Knows, which also features previously released singles “Everything Unwinds” and “Too Dry To Cry”, is out on September 10th via XL Recordings.
