Poverty is a social welfare issue that has plagued nearly every society, more specifically women in poverty. The issue of women and poverty and the Feminization of Poverty is a very disturbing issue indeed. The way our society is built and a history of oppression has lead to the inequalities in the genders. This inequality and social status is among the reasons for this trend of Poverty. The trend of Poverty is not new throughout the world. Poverty simply means that a larger number of people in poverty are women. The gap between women and men in poverty has continued to grow in the past decade. Reasons for this increasing gap come from many different levels of our society.
The problem of poverty is considered as the biggest challenge to development planning in India. High poverty levels are synonymous with poor quality of life, deprivation, malnutrition, illiteracy and low human resource development. Poverty can be defined as a social phenomenon in which a section of the society is unable to fulfill even its basic necessities of life. The means of transport and communication have not been properly developed. The road transport is inadequate and railway is quite less.
Due to lack of proper development of road and rail transport, agricultural marketing is defective. Industries do not get power supply and raw materials in time and finished goods are not properly marketed. For industrial development, able and efficient entrepreneurs are needed. In India, there is shortage of efficient entrepreneurs. Less industrial development is a major cause of poverty. Indian economy is rural economy. Indian agriculture is backward. It has great pressure of population. Income in agriculture is low and disguised unemployment is more in agriculture. The social structure of our country is full of outdated traditions and customs like caste system, laws of inheritance and succession. These hamper the growth of economy.
