🏚️ History & Architecture
The mansion was built during the British era. Historical records indicate that in 1913 it was rented by Victor Bayley, a British official who served as Assistant Secretary to the Railway Board in Shimla, then the summer capital of British India.
Architecturally, the building reflects late Victorian hill-style design, characterized by spacious verandahs, sloping gabled roofs, sturdy stone walls, and decorative wooden detailing typical of British seasonal homes in the hills.

According to local accounts, the mansion gradually became abandoned after reports of unusual and unexplained incidents within the house. A well-known story describes an upstairs room that was locked because of paranormal rumors, only to be discovered in complete disarray the following morning without any clear explanation.
Over time, tales of ghostly apparitions and mysterious sounds spread, strengthening its image as one of Shimla’s reputed haunted locations.
🏚️ Dilapidation & Present Condition
Following India’s independence in 1947, the property changed ownership and remained mostly unoccupied for many years. Due to neglect, significant portions of the structure deteriorated and fell into disrepair.
In more recent times, the mansion is said to have been purchased by a private owner and partly restored. However, it remains privately owned and is not generally accessible to visitors. Much of its eerie reputation stems from its long period of abandonment rather than its current state.
📍 Location
Charleville Mansion is situated near the Postal Quarters on Kali Bari Road in Shimla, close to the Ridge and Mall Road area. Although many tourists pass by the site, entry to the property is not freely permitted.
