Although Amsterdam is undoubtedly the city of Heineken (have you SEEN the lines to get into the company's museum?) and other beers of the lowlands, there comes a day in everyone's life when a glass of wine in the warm sunshine is necessary. And as the sunlight gets ever hotter, and Amsterdam streets even busier (oh yes, they get EVEN busier than they are now) a table on the patio of a wine-bar just may be where peace and serenity are to be found. And surprisingly enough, Amsterdam has quite a few of such getaways for the wine-lovers out there.
Happily enough, quite a few of Amsterdam's wine bars are deliciously affordable and have a spectacular world selection considering the Netherlands is such a beer-loving nation.
Vyne provides a trendy and modern setting for your wine connoisseur-ing. In fact it is perhaps one of the trendiest of all Amsterdam bars. Once inside, you will find hundreds of bottles displayed in temperature-controlled cases, all ready to tempt you. The canapes are likewise to die for. Overall, the subdued atmosphere is a great place to bring a date. If you don't have a date, pretty much anyone else you enjoy spending time with will do - the selections is fabulous and there's something for everyone.
Bubbles and Wine, in addition to its adorable name, boasts both a fantastic location (2 mins walking from Dam Square) and an extensive of by wines served both by bottle and by glass. If the weather is nice, you can sip your wine outside on the terrace, propped up on one of the big wine barrels.
Wijnbar Boelen & Boelen is great not only for its wine selection, which is more than satisfactory, but also for the delicious food that is offered for to go with your wine. In a style that I have come to recognize as wholeheartedly Dutch, the decor is pleasingly straightforward, comfortable and unpretentious - terms you'd not often associate with most urban wine bars, but then again Amsterdam has never been like most.
Wijnbar diVino, in the words of its website, is neither hip nor trendy, but it is damned cozy and comfortable. Located on a quiet, largely residential street it is peaceful, relaxing and reminiscent of an Italian 'casa.' The prices are fantastic, and the environment - a great one to unwind in after a long day's work.
Suffice to say, ordering some Dutch cheese with your wine is highly recommended.
