Let’s talk about wig storage! A not so glamorous topic, I know. But every wig or hair lover should know how important this step can be to your investment. It’s literally the difference between having your hair / wig for a few weeks…to months.
How to store your wigs in between use
As you may know, I review mostly synthetic wigs on my site. They are much cheaper than human hair, full lace wigs. But you can still spend up to $50 on a synthetic wig. So you want it to last a couple of months at least in between wears. I will go over my wig storage process and how it has helped me extend the life of my wigs over time.
Keep your wigs looking better longer
To start with, I don’t keep the wig boxes. They are ridiculously bulky and ultra hard to store. What I do keep are the bags, the care card, and the wig netting. When I’m done wearing a wig, I put it back in the netting and stick it in the wig bag with the care card. The care card is important because it has the wig’s name, color, specs, etc.
Start with shoe boxes
When I first started my wig storage journey, I was using plastic shoe boxes that you can buy from Walmart. And same process – put the wig in the net, then in the bag with wig card, finally place in shoe box. I’d store the shoe boxes either in my closet or under my bed.
Larger bins work too
Then… There were too many wigs. A great problem for a wig/hair lover like myself. But I was running out of space. And the plastic shoe box storage method was no longer working for me. So I got a larger bin! I still use this by the way. These are the huge plastic bins that you put your blankets and comforters in and store under your bed. It’s super wide and long so it can hold a good amount of wigs. I would say about 15 to 20 wigs give or take.
The ultimate wig storage solution!
A shoe rack! Sounds weird but let me tell you, it works! Instead of hanging shoes on this rack, I hang my wigs there. Now of course these wigs that hang on the shoe rack aren’t in the bags. In fact, they’re not even in the netting either. They’re just hanging there “on display.” Usually these are the wigs I wear most or most recently. It’s easy for me to grab a wig, throw it on and when I’m done to just hang it back up there. Although it’s not in a wig bag, it stays tangle free. It’s not getting mangled with anything else, so it’s a really easy, convenient way to store wigs.
Easy, visable storage for less!
The shoe rack has been a real life saver for wig storage. And visually, it’s amazing. I can walk into the closet and see all the wigs I have in one shot. Whereas the wig bin I store under my bed is more of a filing system. I still have to fumble through everything to find wigs.
This is how to store wigs in between use easily and cheaply. I have many synthetic units which range from $20 to $50. With these storage methods, they last me over a year in most cases. I store them this way and they look just as good as the first day I got them (: Taking good care of your wigs and storing them properly will definitely protect your investment.
Once you have your wig storage system in place, you will see more wear time with your synthetic wigs. Guaranteed. Definitely let me know in the comments how you’re currently storing your wigs. I would loved to hear and share your own storage tips with me.
