Why a Tipping Policy Matters
First, let’s talk about the legal side. The Payment of Wages (Amendment) (Tips and Gratuities) Act 2022 means that every salon needs to display a tipping policy. If you don’t, you could face fines of up to €2,500.
While the Workplace Relations Commission (WRC), the body for enforcing this legislation, says that you don’t need to get consensus from your employees on your policy (the ultimate decision on tipping policy is with the salon owner), it does say that employees need to be consulted in the decision-making process. But beyond compliance, a good tipping policy is about fairness and transparency. Your team works hard, and it’s crucial that they feel valued and treated equitably.

2. Who Gets a Share of Tips
One size doesn’t fit all, so consider how tips will be shared among different roles, including non-service providers like front desk staff or trainees. The law gives you the discretion to decide, but fairness is key. Discuss this openly with your team to ensure the policy feels just and reflects everyone’s contributions.
3. Handling Disputed Transactions / Chargebacks
Chargebacks can be tricky. If a client disputes a transaction and the tip has already been distributed to your staff, your business might end up covering the cost of the tip that was charged back, unless otherwise stipulated in your tipping policy.
To protect your salon from the financial burden, you might want to discuss with your staff that in the event of a chargeback, the tip amount can be recovered from their future wages. This needs to be communicated clearly to your team so there are no surprises down the line.

Internal Tipping Policy
As well as displaying the notice to your customers, you must also create a more detailed internal policy that is distributed to staff, that outlines all the agreements made during your consultation session. The WRC provides an example of an internal policy on page 34 of their information guide.
