Why So Bitchy?

By Tanvi Rastogi @tanviidotcom

I have been lately trying to understand what compels people to leave mean, nasty or rude remarks all over the Internet, whether it's on YouTube or Blog or other websites. This is not a thought that I am pondering over as a blogger, but as a person who spends a lot of time reading and researching for stuff online and often come across comments which I personally feel are pointless. They do not provide constructive criticism or any sort of feedback. They are often written with spite and are in abusive language. So here's what I wonder - What could be the possible outcome that the commenter is trying to achieve with that kind of feedback?

I cannot recall even one instance when have I ever left a mean or abusive comment anywhere on the Internet. For one, I rarely feel I have time to write a succinct and clear comment on other people's posts when I disagree with them, secondly I know by experience that no one cares what anyone else thinks. They wanted to put their thoughts out there ... they did and if you don't like it don't watch/read it. And thirdly I have never found anything to be THAT big a deal that I ever needed to go all full-blast-bitch on them.

Sure, I've disagreed with people's thoughts or rolled my eyes at what they decided to put out there for public consumption but I choose to keep my thoughts to myself or share them with people close to me OR if something leaves an impactful impression on me, then I blog about it (without calling them out or getting abusive).

So I am back to my original question, what compels others to share their unnecessary comments on other people's posts / blogs / website etc.?
