Why Should You Visit Rome?

Explore the Colosseum on Our Rome Tours

Rome is often known as the Eternal City, and it retains much of its old-world charm today. Visitors flock to its streets to witness the heart of Roman life and to experience the historic narrative that still imbues the rustic buildings and quaint side streets.
Here are some of the best things to do during your stay in the Rome city
1. Colosseum
Rome’s biggest attraction takes visitors back to the days of gladiators and ringside entertainment. The Flavian Amphitheatre is one of the most renowned feats of architecture in the world that has withstood the difficulties of time. The Colosseum was originally inaugurated in AD 80. Shortly after it opened, it showcased 100 days of wild animal fights in an attempt to keep the social unrest in Rome at the time at bay.
2. Galleria Borghese
Rome’s most impressive museum is packed full of Bernini statues and Caravaggio paintings. The building alone is well worth a visit, what with its stunning façade that once held ornate sculptures and ancient reliefs (these are now on display in the Louvre).
3. St Peter’s Basilica
The Vatican, the small country that houses the Pope and nestles in the heart of Rome, is home to St Peter’s Basilica. This beautiful Renaissance church was built by world-famous architects, including Michelangelo, and can hold up to 20,000 worshippers at any given time.
4. Trevi Fountain
The Trevi Fountain is an iconic scene in Rome. Often surrounded by milling crowds who want their opportunity to throw in a cent in return for a wish, the fountain showcases a beautifully intricate rococo design that was the brain child of Nicola Salvi. It was completed back in 1792, complete with impressive sculpted figures, and remains an important attraction in Rome.
5. Roman Forum
Offering a glimpse into the hedonistic past of Rome, the Roman Forum is made up of a large expanse of excavated ground that was once home to ancient Roman temples, bustling squares, and important government buildings, some of which dated back as much 2,000 years.
6. Grab a Gelato
No visit to Rome is complete without tucking into a traditional Italian gelato. On any given warm day, you can spot nuns, politicians, and well-dressed socialites taking a gelato break, so why not join them? There are plenty of flavours and types to choose from too, whether you want a brightly coloured fruit flavoured treat or an organic gourmet version.
7. Pantheon
Temples formed a huge part of the landscape in historic Rome, and the Pantheon remains one of the most iconic. Built somewhere between 118 and 125 AD it boasts a Renaissance design and a collection of famous tombs, including Raphael’s.
