The Vatican City is quite possibly the most religious and respected places on earth.

Home to the Pope, several significant cultural sites and some of the worlds most prestigious artwork, the Vatican City may be tiny, but it is packed with interesting things to see and do.

Interesting facts about the Vatican City

1. It is the smallest country in the world, with a population of less than 600 people and covering around 100 acres of land. It really is tiny!
2. The city itself is surrounded by tall stone walls.
3. The Vatican is an absolute Monarchy. Therefore, it has its own currency, prison, police, and unique laws. The Pope is the absolute monarch and holds complete power of absolutely everything to do with the state. He can essentially make any decision he wishes.
4. The Vatican is a UNESCO World Heritage site.

The Vatican Palace

Home to the leader of the Roman Catholic Church, the Pope. There have been several Pope’s over the last few centuries, however all Pope’s have lived in the Vatican Palace since 1929. Although the Vatican City is completely surrounded by Italy in every direction, it is an independent state in order for the Pope to use his universal authority. The Palace is a beautiful renaissance style building that was first constructed in 1589.

Saint Peter’s Basilica

Considered to be the most important and holiest Catholic church on earth, the Saint Peter’s Basilica is a must see when visiting the Vatican City. The reason this church holds such great importance in the world of Catholicism is due to the fact that the honourable Saint Peter is said to be buried under the church, therefore making it extremely holy. The current Basilica was built in the 1500’s, after being replaced by the original structure from the 4th century.

The Sistine Chapel

Located inside the Vatican Museums, the Sistine Chapel is arguably one of the most beautiful landmarks in the Vatican City. It is used as the Pope’s private chapel and the ceiling was intricately painted by famous artist Michelangelo in the 1500’s, taking him more than four years to complete his masterpiece. The Chapel holds great importance, as whenever a new Pope comes into power, he is elected in the Sistine Chapel.

The Vatican Museums are some of the most well respected and important museums in the world. Inside holds a huge collection of historic, rare, and notable artworks that have been collected over hundreds of years by previous Pope’s. The Vatican Museums are a must see when you are visiting this beautiful place, it is full of unbelievable art collections, significant artifacts, and archeology. You will leave feeling awe-inspired by the magnificence of this structure and all that it holds.
