Over ten years ago there was sketch on Saturday Night Live in which Tina Fey, Amy Poehler, Maya Rudolph, and Rachel Dratch dressed up like stereotypical moms. Dated haircuts, tucked in shirts, high waist unflattering jeans etc. It was a fake ad for a brand called "Mom Jeans". The sketch was hilariously spot on and gave these jeans a name that stuck.
For years, there was a negative connotation when it came to mom jeans. Girls took pride in the fact that their mother were cool enough not to wear them while also vowing to never wear them themselves. Mom jeans were a sign of giving up. Even in the sketch, the announcer says, "Give her something that says, "I'm not a woman any more. I'm a Mom."
Fast forward to this year and mom jeans are one of the hottest denim trends. Funny how the tides turn, huh? When I first started to see girls wearing them I cannot deny that I was not the biggest fan. Now, I am kicking myself for not already having a pair!
I honestly cannot even tell you exactly why I love them. It is something about the fit. I love that while they are high waisted they still have a loose fit. There is also something effortless about them. Throw on a tee shirt, mom jeans, and flats and you look super care-free and chic.
Even as I type this I know that it is sheer and utter madness, but I do not care. I love mom jeans, I will be getting a pair, and I probably will wear them often! And when I do get a pair, you can expect a style guide on how to wear them. So brace yourselves, Lex Loves Couture is on the mom jean train get on or be left at the station!
